Uprising Magazine is the University of Northern Iowa’s student-run fashion, social justice, arts & culture magazine. I served as the Marketing Director for two years, where I primarily focused my efforts on our social media strategy. I lead our Marketing Committee of 7 members in planning and creating content for our Instagram and TikTok, as well as securing ads from local businesses to be featured in each issue.
I redesigned our Instagram presence to have a more casual feel and relate more to our audience of fashion-forward 18-24 year-olds. Rather than posting only information that pertained to Uprising and our upcoming releases as was done in years past, I introduced Carousel Posts of aesthetic pics and outfit checks submitted by members of Uprising themselves. Our shared “photo dumps” Google Drive folder became a community effort, and members loved seeing bits of their camera rolls posted on our Instagram. Because of this, even Uprising’s most casual content was often shared by members and their friends. Uprising became a page that was not followed only for the magazine, but for the vibes.
To increase engagement on our Instagram and spark word of mouth prior to our releases, I organized three Instagram giveaways with prizes that corresponded with each issue’s theme. We built the hype around our releases by rewarding participants with extra entries to the giveaways when they commented and tagged friends to our posts.
Lastly, as Uprising covers social justice topics and celebrates diversity and inclusion, I created space on our Instagram to recognize cultural holidays and educate our audience through these posts.

Uprising’s feed was curated to be colorful, stylish, informative, and casual.
Our TikTok content shared moments from behind the scenes, built hype for future magazine releases and alerted our audience when new issues were available. Check out the video gallery below to see some of the TikToks I made during my time with Uprising!
