Remembering the Monarch

Augmented Reality

Graphic Design
Remembering the Monarch is a digital experience designed to educate viewers about the life of the monarch butterfly through augmented reality (AR). In this group project of eight students, each of us created a unique postcard illustrating something interesting about the monarch. Additionally, we each created an AR experience using Spark AR Studio that could be accessed by scanning a QR code on the back of each postcard.

During this experience, I collaborated with my peers to ensure our collection of postcards was cohesive, and we went through several rounds of revisions before reaching our final printed designs. I also partnered with another student to design our presentation for our client, the Hartman Reserve Nature Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Scan the “Follow me, Butterfly” QR code below to experience the interactive AR filter for yourself!
Please note: this filter only works with a mobile device that is logged into an Instagram account.

My AR experience features a flower on a hand tracker, and a butterfly that flaps its wings as it follows the flower, searching for nectar. To represent the fact that the adult monarch has a variety of food sources, users can tap anywhere on the screen to change the flower.
